Deeply colored, dark garnet to the rim. A super ripe nose of currants, blackberries, black cherry and plum, licorice, caramel and spice in the background with a hint of vanilla bean. This wine is thick and rich, with super-fine mouth coating tannins and the texture of fine dark chocolate on the finish. This is certainly a Claret we have never seen before.

Matthews Estate’s red wines begin with the purple-colored 2007 Claret, a Cabernet-based wine aged in 40% new French oak. It displays an excellent nose of cedar, violets, herbs, spice box, cassis, and black currant. Medium to full-bodied on the palate with ample fruit and spice, this well-balanced red blend will benefit from several years of cellaring but can be enjoyed now.
