2019Royal Slope Cabernet Sauvignon
The 2019 Matthews Royal Slope Cabernet Sauvignon comes from several small vineyard parcels exclusively within the Royal Slope AVA. Hand-harvested in the early fall mornings, it was hand-sorted and fermented in stainless steel (100%). The free-run wine was aged in French oak (70% new) for 23 months. Only 10 barrels made the final blend, which was bottled in October of 2021.
A brooding expression of cocoa powder and blueberry liqueur is enlivened by notes of fresh garden herbs. Earthy notes of damp forest floor and juicy summer blackberries give this wine an enticing flavor profile. Intensely plum colored with concentrated blue fruits, dark chocolate, and sweet cigar smoke finish. Muscular tannin provides structure while bright acidity from this cooler vintage brings everything into balance.
