Heaven, it was only a matter of time.
Matthews is excited to announce two new wines to our AVA portfolio, the very first from Horse Heaven Hills.
Please welcome the 2020 Horse Heaven Hills Claret, and Cuvée.
The Horse Heaven Hills has produced more 100pt Cabernet Sauvignons than any other Washington State AVA, combined. It was only a matter of time before Matthews began making wine from this iconic AVA.
In 2020, with Royal Slope and Red Mountain AVA wines underway, our family turned our focus even further south to the Horse Heaven Hills. Located (map) on the border of Washington State and Oregon, the region is home to many of the most iconic Cabernet Sauvignons ever produced in Washington State.
As we looked to begin crafting wines, we isolated two distinct areas of the Horse Heaven Hills. An area around Champoux (map), and an area around Wallula Gap (map).
We are excited to announce the first HHH AVA wines are set for release, coming exclusively from Champoux Vineyard and Wallula Gap. The 2020 HHH Claret and 2020 HHH Cuvee are set for release on X. We will be hosting a pre-release event December 1st for our members to sample these wines, as well as some barrel samples of our 2021 wines.

To say we are excited about the Horse Heaven Hills would be an understatement. All of our 2020 Matthews Reserve-level wines will show greater complexity with this new AVA, adding a new dynamic to the AVA’s we already work with.
This is the first vintage of the HHH Claret and Cuvee, and we can’t wait to share them with our members. To help bring you into the HHH, we’ve added a new webpage that further details this remarkable AVA. Click here for the HHH AVA page. Additionally, click for more on Red Mountain (link) or Royal Slope (link).
