2020Reserve Cabernet Franc
2020Reserve Cabernet Franc
The 2020 Matthews Reserve Cabernet Franc was crafted from several vineyards across 5 separate AVAs: Horse Heaven Hills, Walla Walla Valley, Red Mountain, Royal Slope, and Columbia Valley. Farmed using sustainable practices, the vines were limited to one or two clusters per shoot for maximum concentration. They were hand-harvested in the early mornings in October of 2020. Upon arriving in the winery, the fruit was cluster-sorted, berry-sorted, and fermented in a combination of stainless steel (89%) and French oak (11%). The free-run wine was cellared for 21 months in new French oak barrels (100%). Only 18 of our highest-grade barrels were selected and bottled in July of 2022, producing only 434 cases.
The 2020 Reserve Cabernet Franc shows vibrant purple to dark crimson in the glass and elicits aromas of red and black plum, confectioners chocolate, mulberry, bay leaf and vanilla bean paste. On the palate, crushed gravel notes mingle with dark roasted coffee, sweet kirsch, and classic Cabernet Franc notes of bilberry and green tea. Grippy tannins coat the weighty mid-palate and offer a long, textural finish. Intense lingering flavors of bright cherry and chocolate coffee bean.
