A dark ruby to deep garnet color leads to aromas of mocha, beef drippings, cola and mountain huckleberry. The palate shows brighter notes of ginger root, ripe cranberry, and star anise with a medium bodied, dusty tannin mouthfeel. The finish lingers with notes of wet stone and berry reduction.

The 2020 Matthews Red Mountain Cuvée comes from a couple of vineyards, Hedges and Red Mountain within the Red Mountain AVA. After hand-harvesting in the early fall mornings, the fruit was hand-sorted and fermented using both stainless-steel tanks and French oak barrels (8%). The free-run juice was cellared in French oak (63% new) for 20 months. Only 27 barrels were ultimately selected to be blended, and finally bottled in July 2022, resulting in only 671 cases.
