2021Royal Slope Cuvée
The 2021 Matthews Royal Slope Cuvée is comprised of several vineyard parcels within the Royal Slope AVA. Key sites are from Solaksen, Scarline, Stoneridge vineyards. This wine represents the broad flavor and aromatic expressions of the Royal slopes AVA with in the Columbia Valley of Washington State. The winemaking team worked with vineyard managers to restrict yields, creating small, concentrated berries. Cool fall nights preserved freshness in the wine while continuing flavor development. Hand-harvesting took place in the early mornings throughout October.
Once arriving at the winery, the fruit was cluster-sorted, de-stemmed, and berry-sorted. The grapes were placed in tank and cold soaked for two days before a 14-day fermentation along with 14 extra days of extended maceration, making it a total of 32 days in tank for maximum extraction. The free run wine was barreled down into varying formats of French oak and cellared for 21 months.
The 2021 Royal Slope Cuvée is a deep crimson in the glass with pretty aromatics of guava, red currant, dried flowers, and wet stone. The full-bodied palate showcases flavors of huckleberry pie, dark coffee, and earthy minerals. The sappy mouthfeel is accented by pillowy tannins and a delicious finish of raspberry liqueur and cacao nib.
53% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, 8% Malbec

"The really good Merlot dominant 2021 Matthews ‘Royal Slope Cuvee’ Red Wine offers garrigue and blackberry notes on the nose alongside shades of tar, with stony undercurrents. The palate is soft and enticing with good richness and a seamless texture. Layered with its core of dense dark fruits, tobacco leaf and coffee grounds, this is a beautiful showing that is already drinking nicely at the two year mark. Savor this beauty now and over the next ten years to come."
